Program Leader : Prof Dennis Mulcahy, University of South Australia

OBJECTIVE

The Education and Training program has as its primary objective the creation of a cohort of young, high achieving and relevantly trained professionals to serve the Australian drinking water industry. These young people will drive the up-skilling of the industry and help to establish a more effective interface between the industry and universities. Many will become the industry's future managers. There is strong interaction between academics from the participating universities and water industry participants in the provision of the Education and Training program.

Support and guidance for the CRC's education and training activities is provided by the CRC Education & Training Steering Committee. This committee, chaired by Professor Felicity Roddick (RMIT University), meets quarterly and comprises representatives from each of the nine participating universities.

ACTIVITIES

Postgraduate Scholarships
The CRC provides full or partial scholarships for Masters and PhD students.
PhD Scholarships are offered each year to provide able candidates with specific research opportunities relevant to the needs of the Australian water industry.

As of August 2007, 58 CRC postgraduate students were enrolled through the 9 member universities across Australia, and 52 had completed their studies and graduated. The diversity of projects undertaken by students is illustrated by the presentations at the CRCWQT's Biennial Postgraduate Student Conferences held in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 . These conferences provide an opportunity for postgraduate students from our participating universities to present their work to an audience including water industry personnel from our industry participants as well as their academic peers. A listing of PhD and Masters graduates and thesis abstracts is also available.

Honours Scholarships
From 2002 the activities of the program were expanded to include provision of Honours Scholarships for talented students at the universities participating in the CRC. This provides unique opportunities for students to broaden their knowledge of water quality science, through a range of activities from the undergraduate level through to postgraduate research degrees.Honours projects are arranged via the host university.

Summer Research Scholarships
Several Summer Scholarships are available each year for final year undergraduate students. These scholarships offer students the opportunity to complete short research projects at one of the CRCWQT nodes. The students make a presentation on their work at the Summer Research Scholarship Reporting Seminar held in February each year.
Details of the Summer scholarship program are available for 2003/2004 , 2004/2005, 2005/2006, 2006/2007 and 2007/08.

Indigenous Student Scholarship Scheme
From 2004 the CRC has offered a scholarship scheme to indigenous students undertaking full-time undergraduate degree or diploma courses at one of our participating universities. The scheme offered a stipend, plus a range of opportunities and activities to assist the personal and professional development of students.
Applications for this scheme have now closed.

Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Coursework Masters programs
Activities include sections of the Masters Program in Hydrology and Water Resources offered by a consortium of universities and research centres.

Awards and Prizes
CRC postgraduate students are encouraged to compete for a range of awards and prizes relevant to their research career, including the Young Water Scientist of the Year Award, an annual event run by the Water Forum CRCs. In 2003, the CRC introduced an annual Student Publication Prize for the best research paper or book chapter by a CRC student.

Conferences, seminars and workshops
The CRC provides support for the annual Environmental Research Event - a conference initiated and organised by students in environmental science and engineering. The 2004 ERE raised funds to construct a well to provide a safe source of drinking water to villagers in northern Uganda.

Support is also available for CRC students to participate in other national and international conferences and workshops relevant to their studies.
