Note This publication was last updated in December 2006. Since then, there have been changes in water use patterns due to continuing drought and water restrictions across Australia. In addition, structural changes in the management of water supplies have occurred in several states. Some of the information contained in this Consumer's Guide is therefore no longer current.

Once, when you turned on a tap, you probably gave little thought to where the water came from and how it got there. It was just water.

Now, Australians want to know more about their water.

This easy-to-read Australian guide has been developed for the general public, community and environment groups, students and others seeking information on our water supply systems.

This is a working document and will be revised and expanded over time in response to feedback from users.
